Aechmea fasciata EEK-mee-uh fash-ee-AY-tuh, a member of the Bromeliaceae family (Bromeliad plants), is also known by its common name Silver Vase or the Urn Plant. Aechmeas are epiphytes in nature grow attached to other plants even rocks. They get the moisture nutrients they need through their foliage. Its best to keep the vase, cup, urn or tank (the center where the flower arises out of) 14 to 12 way full of water. Being a typical bromeliad, the Aechmea genus has wide arching strap type leaves which are leathery. The A.fasciata's (this species) are kind of powdered looking, that are silver and green color. The foliage can also be variegated. While the foliage has great displaying potential indoors, the flower head stands out even more with it's eye catching looks. The stunning silver saw palmetto is supremely easy to grow, creating a more ornamental version of an old-fashioned Florida plant. Saw palmettos are native to Florida and the southeastern United States, and the less common silver variety is a uniquely colored landscape plant for a naturalized look. Perfect as a filler, hedge, backdrop or accent, these striking plants add old-Florida charm. The saw in the plant's name refers to the saw-like teeth on the leaf stems. Since a palmetto plant rarely needs pruning, you won't come in contact often. Palmettos can handle full sun to complete shade, growing slowly to a typical height of 3 to 6 feet. The high salt tolerance of the silver palmetto makes it an ideal planting for a home on the water.
