The flowers of Huernia zebrina look like they come right out of a fantasy movie: a corolla consisting of zebra-striped red and cream-colored petals with a raised, glossy, rubber-like burgundy ring in the center called annulus. This gave the houseplant its common name, lifesaver plant or lifebuoy plant. Huernia zebrina is a small perennial succulent that grows in a creeping pattern. You might think that a plant that stunning is difficult to grow but it’s not, it is actually low maintenance, as long as it’s in a pot with the right potting soil and excellent drainage, and watered correctly. Huernia zebrina is a good houseplant even for small spaces, as its spread can be limited by the size of the pot. It can even be grown in a dish garden. The proper amount of light is very important for Huernia zebrina. In its native range in southern Africa, it’s an understory plant. An eastern- or western-facing window that provides partial shade is best. Southern exposure with midday sun and extreme heat will stress the plant and make it susceptible to disease. The right soil is crucial to successfully grow Huernia zebrina. Both the soil and the pot need excellent drainage.

Add a touch of festive cheer to your favorite rooms with the beautiful Zygo Cactus (commonly known as the Holiday Cactus). This stunning plant blooms in vibrant colors, making it a wonderful addition to your holiday decor and a great way to celebrate the season. Keep your Zygo Cactus happy by placing it in bright, indirect light. Water this charming houseplant when the top inch of soil feels dry, typically about 1/2 cup once every 2 weeks, ensuring excess water drains away. Adjust your watering schedule based on your environment—never let the Zygo Cactus sit in standing water. Should your Zygo Cactus outgrow its current container, repot by gently removing it from its pot and placing it in one that’s 2 to 4 inches wider. Fill with fresh potting mix and water thoroughly. While it’s often grown as a houseplant, the Zygo Cactus can thrive outdoors in USDA Zones 9-11. The Zygo Cactus is a fantastic choice for both beginners and plant enthusiasts looking to brighten their homes during the holidays. Enjoy it on tabletops, windowsills, or as a festive centerpiece. This long-lived houseplant makes for a thoughtful gift for housewarmings, holiday celebrations, or just to show someone you care.
