Elephant's ears are stunning houseplants. They often feature dark, shield-shaped foliage that may be accentuated by white veins running throughout the leaves. The plants will flower occasionally, sending up a spike with a calla-like white, light yellow, or cream bloom, but the foliage is the reason the plant is grown. Elephant's ear is the perfect plant for high-humidity areas such as bathrooms and kitchens. African mask, aka Alocasia and elephant's ear, above, isn’t a native of Africa. Instead, it earns its common name from its resemblance to hand-carved African ceremonial masks (and the ears of elephants); it’s actually from the Philippines.

The interesting flowers of this popular tropical shrub are often considered a nature's work of art. Grows to be about 4 ft. tall at maturity, extending to 5 ft. when in bloom, with a 3 ft. W spread. Philodendrons are tropical plants native to Central and South America. These evergreen perennials belong to the Araceae familythe same family as pothos plants. There are hundreds of philodendron species, each with its own unique cultivars. The most common philodendron plants produce long vines or stems adorned with thick, waxy, dark green leaves. They can be planted indoors year-round and are fast growers. Depending on the species of philodendron and the size of the container they're planted in, they can grow anywhere from one to six feet long and equally wide. Philodendrons are also a great plant choice to purify the air in your home. Theyre best planted in the spring, but houseplants typically can be started with success at any time of year. This species typically grows best in partial sunlight. Philodendrons need sun, but they would naturally receive dappled light under a tropical canopy rather than direct light. Indoors, set them up by a window that gets bright, indirect light. Philodendrons like loose potting soil thats rich in organic matter. The soil must have good drainage. For container plants, its recommended to replace your philodendrons soil every couple of years or so. These plants are sensitive to salts that accumulate in the soil via watering, which can cause leaf browning and yellowing. The temperature tolerance of philodendrons varies based on the species. In general, they should not be exposed to temperatures below 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Indoors protect them from cool drafts, such as those from an air-conditioning vent.

Bougainvillea is not your typical houseplantin its natural state, it's a sprawling climber and shrub with formidable thorns, often found on the exterior of buildings (like climbing up a trellis or over a fence) or in gardens in subtropical-to-tropical climates. It's known for its green foliage and vibrant pink, purple, and orange hues that most people assume are the plant's flowershowever, they're actually petal-like bracts that hide bougainvillea's true blooms, which are typically small white or yellow buds. If you don't live in a warm enough climate to successfully grow bougainvillea outdoors year-round, you're in luckthe shrub is surprisingly easy to grow indoors in containers or pots and can thrive if the right conditions are maintained. Despite its showy nature, bougainvillea is not a particularly high-maintenance plant. The vine-y shrub typically blooms three times a year once established, often going dormant and losing its leaves, bracts, and flowers during the cooler winter months. The lady palm (Rhapis excelsa) is a small fan palm that can do exceedingly well indoors under the right conditions. It grows from multiple stems, each topped with upright fronds. The fronds are split into fan-like segments, as might be used by ladies in olden times. The lady palm, sometimes called the bamboo palm or miniature fan palm, is the best suited of all the fan palms to indoor cultivation. Most of the others, such as the imposing Washingtonia or the European fan palm, quickly grow too large for the average room. Along with the slender lady palm the Rhapis also gets called by many other different common names like bamboo palm much most known as the Chamaedorea reed palm, fan palm, finger palm, parlor palm. In general, lady palms are an indoor plant. This is mostly because they do so well in the shade. In fact, the plants leaves change color in the shade, appearing darker and more variegated (if you are growing a striped variety) when grown indoors. Lady palms can thrive in any kind of light from shade to full sunlight. The best results will likely be found in full, but indirect sunlight. The more shade its exposed to, the darker green the leaves will be.

Planter is great quality and nice size. But missing the wooden stand. Upon arrival, the plant had quite a bit of wilted leaves. I hated to have to trim the fern, but unfortunately there was not a chance to revive the leaves. Plant was packaged very well, it’s sad the plant arrived less than expected. But have hopes for the rest of the plant.. Anonymous. Thu Jan 25 2024

The Hibiscus plant is a tropical beauty that will bring an exotic flair to your garden. They are durable plants that can grow to be up to 15 ft. in height, and the colorful blooms will attract hummingbirds and butterflies to your garden. Since hibiscus plants are tropical, they need a certain amount of care to ensure that they thrive. Provide the plants with at least 6 hours of sunlight, especially if you want to see those lovely blooms. Although warm, humid conditions are ideal for tropical hibiscus, you may want to provide a little afternoon shade when it's overly hot. Again, containers make this easy to do. While the hibiscus plant needs a lot of sun, it's very important that you shelter it away from the wind. The stems are more susceptible to breakage if you get the taller varieties of hibiscus, so place them in an area where wind is not going to be much of a factor. If you are having trouble blooming the hibiscus, it's wise to remove as many deadheads as possible to encourage the growth.

This flower is the best ever! It’s really big, beautiful and healthy!. Margie. Northern Cambria, PA. Fri Jul 17 2026

Introduced in 2014, the Olympian Fig produces truly huge, as large as a tangerine, purple skinned fruit with a very sweet red to purple flesh. Its cold hardy breba crop can ripen as early as May and is known to withstand temperatures into the teens. The plant itself is hardy down to zero degrees once well established even though it will freeze to the ground only to return in the spring and bear a crop of fruit the following summer. The Olympian Fig was discovered in Olympia, Washington by Denny McGaughy and is a choice variety for cool climates as well as warmer regions. Withstanding the test of time this is actually an heirloom that had been growing in a protected site for over 100 years. Olympian was confirmed to be a distinct cultivar via DNA testing when compared with the 270 varieties at the USDA ARS Germplasm Repository in California. Fig trees do best where they get at least 8 hours of direct sun per day. Once well established they are fairly drought tolerant but extended dry periods can cause leaf and fruit drop as well as early dormancy.

Adenium desert rose plants are perfect specimens for the intrepid or novice gardener. These East African and Arabian natives are wonderful in the interior container garden or as warm climate additions to the patio display. Caring for desert rose plants requires a full sun location and well-drained soil. Properly mimicking their native regional conditions will garner plenty of rose-like blooms on an architectural marvel of a plant. Desert rose is a low-maintenance succulent that produces dozens of trumpet-shaped flowers in shades of pink, rose, or white in the summer. Like many succulents, it needs conditions that are bright, warm, and dry. Desert rose (Adenium obesum) and its many hybrids are often seen in retail garden centers. Flowers average 23 inches in diameter and may be single, double, or even triple. To maintain the profuse flowering, the plants must six hours or more of bright light each day. Desert rose makes a dramatic specimen for a deck or patio but since it's sensitive to temperatures below 40 degrees, its usually grown in containers that can be brought inside for winter. South Florida gardeners can grow this as a small shrub.

A terracotta pot creates a warm Mediterranean look, while a white or black planter gives the plant a cleaner contemporary finish. This premium flowering shrub is an ideal choice for poolside landscaping, patio makeovers, colorful container displays, and outdoor spaces that need a bold decorative element.

A persimmon is the edible fruit of a number of species of trees in the genus Diospyros. Persimmons are generally light yellow orange to dark red orange in colour, and depending on the species, vary in size and may be spherical, acorn or pumpkin shaped. The calyx often remains attached to the fruit after harvesting, but becomes easier to remove as it ripens. Full sun with some air movement is recommended for persimmon trees in inland areas, although they will tolerate some partial shade. Persimmons grown in cooler areas should have full sun with protection from cooling breezes. As an attractive ornamental the tree fits well in the landscape. Persimmons can withstand a wide rage of conditions as long as the soil is not overly salty, but does best in deep, well drained loam. A pH range of 6.5 to 7.5 is preferred. The tree has a strong tap root which may mean digging a deeper hole than usual when planting. Persimmon trees will withstand short periods of drought, but the fruit will be larger and of higher quality with regular watering. Extreme drought will cause the leaves and fruit to drop prematurely. Any fruit left on the tree will probably sunburn. Persimmons are successfully grown in deep, well-drained slightly acidic soil. A location that receives full sun is ideal for the tree although partial shade may be tolerated.
