This is a classic foot stool and the black finish is quite striking. The steps are narrow, so I would not recommend it for someone of "a certain age" for climbing up to high cabinets. For a foot stool or easy reach to a high bed, it's perfect. If I could, I would rate it 4.5 due to a chip in the wood design. It's small enough that I believe I can putty and paint it myself since my husband already discarded the packaging.
