Once upon I time I could sharpen my knifes to razor sharpness by hand. Decades later my hands are no longer steady enough to do that. I spent 10 minutes reading the instructions and then ten minutes getting two 8" knives sharper than I could do it by hand. After using it a few more times I'll be able to get a knife sharp in under a minute. Seriously, I think I'll be able to sharpen a knife as fast as a professional chef does with one of their sharpening rods. The Diamond Rod Knife Sharpening Steel is made of diamond that is electroplated on the surface which is harder than steel. Diamond material makes it an ideal tool for repairing a knife's edge. Hold rod downward firmly and hold the knife at a 15-20 degree angle away from rod to use. Not break resistant, do not drop on the ground or hit on hard surface. Not for serrated edges.

This knife sharpener is sufficient if you're nervous about the handheld one like I am. I will say, it does not seen to make the knife super sharp, so don't expect slices like Chef Ramsey or anything. This is the only electric sharpener I know of where you can change out a sharpening stone set to switch from 20-degree-bevel knives (western knives) and 15-degree-bevel knives (asian knives) . The sharpener isn't cheap, but it seems to work really well and it saves having to chase down a sharpening service (who probably uses the same equipment) every time I need to touch up my kitchen knives.. I found it to be useless..., first, it was not comfortable to handle, probably a combination of it being too small and/or my arthritic hands made it clumsy to handle. That, alone, would not have mattered to me as long as it did what it was supposed to do [my reason for purchasing it]—Sharpen! That, it did NOT do. Fortunately I have my long-time friend next door who takes all my "online rejects...," that way I don't feel guilty for wasting money or for being too lazy to return it [it also gives me a good reason to buy a different one].
