These small kitchen appliances that come equipped with metal attachments, various settings to control the speed at which your ingredients are mixed, and for the larger products, a bowl is included. If you would like to try a mechanically assisted baking mixer before investing in an expensive standing model, such as the iconic Empire Red KitchenAid, then consider purchasing an electric hand-held product, which is often more affordable and best for day-to-day tasks. The includes beaters, dough hooks, and whisks, which give you the ability to make a diverse set of baked goods, like bread, cookies, frosting, and airy whipped creams. There are also attachments that will give you the ability to make pasta, ice cream, fresh juice, and much more. You can find larger, standing appliances with capacities ranging from 3.5 quarts to 7 quarts. The three primary elements to look for when considering a new mixer are the design, capacity, and power.

What is the difference between mixers?

The biggest difference between the variety of models on the market is between the handheld and countertop products. Hand mixers are inexpensive and easy to store, which makes them popular for everyday tasks, like mixing cake batter, cookie dough, and whipping eggs for meringue. It is recommended to use them for light household tasks and not for thick and heavy batters. They typically come with two beaters, and some will even come with dough hooks, whisks, and even occasionally a blending rod for making milkshakes and smoothies. As an added bonus, hand mixer attachments are usually dishwasher safe! The compact design makes it easy to clean up after baking and requires little ongoing maintenance other than keeping the console and the attachments in good working condition.

How do I know which type of mixer to get?

Stand mixers are the preferred option for baking enthusiasts, capable of whipping creams, kneading dough, and churning batter. Typically these are more powerful and larger than their hand-held counterparts. They are great for making large batches of batter and dough and come in over 50 different colors. Being on the heavier side, these well-known appliances often don’t leave your counter-top. With features ranging from a locking tilt-head, to planetary mixing action, to 10 mixing speeds, stand mixer are designed to satisfy all your baking needs. While you are probably familiar with the iconic KitchenAid mixer, there are a variety of other makes and models available today.

Does wattage matter?

After you decide whether you want a versatile hand held product or a more permanent kitchen counter fixture, you should also think about the capacity and performance of either product. The wattage of the item will significantly impact your ability to mix ingredients. If you are looking to mix large batter or dough, then you should consider something that has a minimum of 500 watts. One thing to note is that KitchenAids have all metal gears, which means they translate their wattage into mixing power more efficiently, enabling them able to knead thicker dough's. And as an added bonus, they will last you for many many years.
