The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. I like the Athulya computer desk very much. It’s a perfect size for the limited space I have in my sewing room. It’s a satin finish with a grain like texture. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because of the poor installation instructions.
