The metal frame is about half as thick as it appears to be in the photo and I feel like that makes it not look as bold I guess. Still a solid shelf for a good deal. I will say this it took me about 2 hours to put together with power tools and I'm very experienced building thing's so if you aren't very mechanically inclined maybe bribe a handy friend that has some power tools because if you put this together with the hand tools in The kit you're gonna be there a while..
