It depends on the height of your sofa seat. A coffee table that sits slightly lower than the seat cushion is usually much easier to reach than one that lines up with the armrest. A 20-inch table can feel too tall next to a low sofa, while a 15-inch table might feel too short beside a higher seat. To find the best fit, compare the table height listed in the Specifications tab with the seat height of your current sofa.
Make sure the coffee table is shorter than your sofa so you can easily walk around both ends. A rectangular table pairs nicely with a long sofa, while a round or oval top works best in tight spaces where you might bump into sharp corners. Be sure to check the length and width on the Specifications tab, and leave plenty of space between the sofa and the table.
A lift-top design is ideal if you want the surface closer for eating or working on a laptop. If your table mostly holds drinks, books, or trays, a standard fixed top is usually simpler. Many lift-top options also offer hidden storage beneath the surface. Browse lift-top coffee tables if you need that extra functionality, or stick with a classic table if you prefer a top that stays in place.
A coffee table sits in front of the sofa as a central surface for the main seating area, while an end table rests beside it to keep a lamp and drink within easy reach. Because the two pieces serve different purposes and come in different heights, it helps to consider coffee tables and end tables together when furnishing your living space.
Opt for nesting tables if you need extra surfaces that easily tuck away when guests leave. For everyday use, a single coffee table in front of the sofa is usually the best choice. A matching set only makes sense if you also want side tables in the same finish, so stick with a single coffee table if space is limited.
