Overview
Penny rugs were originally made in the 1800s. Victorian women gathered scraps of wool or wool felt from old clothes or hats and used coins as templates to create designs for mats and rugs. Each decorative wool "penny" was applied in a blanket-stitch fashion to a wool background. Sometimes, the pieces were backed with burlap bags or feed sacks and a penny was stitched under one of the circles to weigh it down and make it lie flat.
  • Made in India with 30% wool, 22% cotton, 37% acrylic, 6% nylon and 5% polyester
  • Designs can be used as lovely handmade rugs as well as wall hangings

Penny rugs were originally made in the 1800s. Victorian women gathered scraps of wool or wool felt from old clothes or hats and used coins as templates to create designs for mats and rugs. Each decorative wool "penny" was applied in a blanket-stitch fashion to a wool background. Sometimes, the pieces were backed with burlap bags or feed sacks and a penny was stitched under one of the circles to weigh it down and make it lie flat.

Early penny rugs were often used as decorative coverings for beds, tables and mantels. After extensive research, Homespice Decor has adapted this beautiful technique to create lovely handmade rugs as well as wall hangings. Each penny rug features sleeves on the back so rugs may be hung vertically or horizontally. The Coin rug in the Penny collection is an intricate rug that truly makes a bold statement. The Coin rug will make a dramatic backdrop to any room. The layered, multi-colored coins and detailed stitching in the Penny collection's Coin rug will surely offer wonderful accents to any decor!

Features:

  • Made in India with 30% wool, 22% cotton, 37% acrylic, 6% nylon and 5% polyester
  • Designs can be used as lovely handmade rugs as well as wall hangings
  • Layered, multi-colored design with detailed stitching for added accents
  • Available in the following sizes: 2' x 3', 3' x 5', 4' x 6', 5' x 8', 7' x 9', 8' x 10', Runner 2'5" x 6', Runner 2'5" x 9'

Recommended Care:

Spot cleaning is important for spills and we emphasize doing it right away. Wool is very durable and responds well to commercial spot cleaners. Common household detergents like Woo-lite also work very well. Cotton as a fiber responds to spot cleaning very well. Just like your clothes, common detergents especially Tide and water work well or oxy-clean type products are very good.

Love the look... hope it holds up

Product Review

I love the look of this rug. I had a rug person scotch guard it and he told me that the darker colors are likely to run, so I hope this doesn't happen. I would buy this rug again and I'd recommend it too. Just be prepared that it may take a little more work cleaning than others.

[...] it is very unique! I love it! I immediately got it "scotch guarded" by a local rug cleaner. I have a toddler and a dog and I'm not sure how well this rug will hold up. I really love the design, colors, and quality of the rug, so it was worth the price for me. I would recommend it, but know in advance that it may be harder to keep clean than your average rug.

Manufacturer Details
Life is an interesting journey. In many ways, like a person’s life, Homespice Décor has gone through changes they would never have anticipated when they first opened in 1998. However, constant in their growth has been their values, principles and their commitment to providing the highest quality customer service in the industry.

Homespice Décor started as a company called J Quilts Co. In the beginning, Junior Gupta was the only employee and traveled from trade show to trade show displaying imported quilts from India. The quilt business grew, and Junior was able to gain a great deal of knowledge concerning customer service and my market. However, as with life, a new change was on the horizon.

Junior's father, Anand Gupta Sr., has always been a big influence in his life. For several years, they discussed entering the braided rug industry. Since neither of them were experts in the braided rug industry, they enlisted the help of renown experts in the field. One gentleman actually had a PhD in braiding and had worked with NASA on the Mission To Mars program, incorporating braiding technology into the space program.

Both Junior and his father quickly learned the technology of materials, pulley tension and weights that greatly affect the quality of product. Their goal was to provide the highest quality of braided rugs and make them affordable to everyone.

In 2000, J Quilts Company offered their first braided rugs. Immediately, the rugs were a huge success. Stores were selling the rugs before the product could even be unwrapped! The demand for the braided rugs grew at an unprecedented rate.

By 2003, braided rugs accounted for 90% of J Quilts Company’s business. The quilts were only 10% and declining. Due to the high demand for the braided rugs, and his commitment to providing the best product and the best customer service, Junior decided to eliminate the quilt line and focus the company’s efforts on braided rugs.

In January 2006, Junior made the decision to change the company’s name from J Quilts Company to Homespice Décor in order to more accurately reflect the core products of the business. Today, Homespice Décor has become an industry leader in braided rugs (outdoor, indoor, wool, cotton), and has expanded line to include Penny Rugs and Rag Rugs. Although the product has changed, Junior's values, principles and commitment to providing the highest quality customer service in the industry has never changed.

Homespice Décor continues the tremendous growth and success experience as J Quilts. The commitment to service is reflected in being selected as a finalist for “Country Living” magazine’s 2006 Vendor of the Year.

Junior would personally like to thank Homespice customers (some of whom have been with the company since the first trade show). Throughout their growth, the company’s priority has been to treat each customer as the most important. Homespice will continue to keep this as their top priority.

Homespice Décor will continue offering unique, high quality products at the best possible price. As always, Homespice Décor stands behind all products with a 100% satisfaction guarantee. Homespice looks forward to introducing new and unique pattern designs (such as SuperNova) and new colors meeting the needs of their customers. Homespice is committed to being the best in product offering and the best in customer service.
