I recently adopted an adult tuxedo cat who was once feral and is very skittish. When I first brought her home, all she wanted to do, besides eat, is to run under the bed and stay there. We would have to coax her out with food. We also have two large dogs who were raised with a cat (who recently passed away at age 20), and they dont have a problem with our new kitty. She also seems to tolerate them well. For some reason, though, she is afraid of people, We decided to get a cat cage so she could feel safe and get used to her new surroundings. We ordered a 3 tier cat cage first. It has wide platforms large enough for a small cat bed. That initially seemed to work well, but the unadjustable platforms were so far apart vertically that she injured her paw jumping between them. I had to put a pillow on the 2nd level to obsorb the landing shock and prevent further injury. This helped, but the 3 tier cage looked very tall and obtrusive in our family room. I later saw the Midwest cage, and it appeared to have a lot of features that I liked, so I ordered it. Its black and blends in more with our furnishings than the silver 3 tier cage, Its also not as high, yet it has 3 adjustable shelves. The shelves can be placed close enough together that my cat can actually stretch out and change shelves without having to jump. There is still room on the bottom for a regular size litter box with cover, and the wide doors provide easy access. The only thing I would change is to have the platforms a few inches wider so the average sized cat (mine is 11 lbs) is able to curl up or strech out more while sleeping on the plush platform covers. We decided to put the 3 tiered cage in a bedroom by the window, and the Midwest cage in the family room also by a window. After 6 months of having both cages, kitty is adjusting well. We can now leave the doors open on both when we are home, so she can go back and forth. She loves to be petted and she actually comes and sits with us on the couch sometimes. No more hiding under the bed. She loves both cages, but prefers sleeping in the 3 tier cage when she wants to be alone. She then moves to the Midwest cage when she wants to eat or be near us in the family room. The Midwest is a good deal for the money, and I recommend it, but adding just 2 more inches on the platforms would make it more comfortable for a sleeping cat."..." Read more
