It is sturdy enough for being this light but I wouldn't say this is a heavy duty and sturdy box that will take abuse such as sitting on it or kids jumping on it. The box is larger than our old which was plastic. So far it has deterred a bear from opening the metal lid. A bear opened our plastic bin and pulled out a small metal barrel holding bird seed. It took us about three to four hours over the course of two afternoons. I recommend two people during assembly. Once assembled the bin seems very sturdy. We were seeking out a dry storage option for our smoker pellets. We wanted to store them outside instead of in my dining room. This box is the perfect solution. If I had the need I would buy another. They would be really cute lined up. While you could use this as a side table, I would sit in it for safety reasons.
