How to Use a Bread Board

A bread board is a solid and easy-to-move wooden plank that serves to protect your surfaces when you cut food items. These days, most people use bread boards to cut their fruit, vegetables, breads and even meat on, which deviates a little from their original purpose.

They were initially used for kneading dough and slicing bread on (none of the other food items). While it is perfectly fine to chop fresh produce on your bread board (as long as you can clean properly afterward), you should avoid cutting raw meat on it as a thorough cleaning of the wood is more difficult which could result in bacteria growth in the wood. Instead use a cutting board for this purpose.

How to Clean a Bread Board

Once you are done using your bread board, it is time to clean it. First and foremost, don't place it in the dishwasher – especially if it is made from wood.

Step 1: Clean the Board Off

Shake or wipe off any excess crumbs from the board.

Step 2: Wash it Off

If you have cut raw meat, it is best to use dishwashing detergent in warm water and a sponge to wash the board – do not submerge it in the water though.

  • Once done, rinse it under running water.

Step 3: Spray the Board

Spray the board with white vinegar and use a paper towel to wipe it down.

  • Vinegar is a natural disinfectant, so make sure not to dilute it.

Step 4: Dry It

Allow your board to air dry before packing it away.

Step 5: Maintain Your Board

If your wood bread board is looking a little dried out and in need of maintenance, you may need to oil it. This should be every two to four months.

  • Start by thoroughly cleaning your board using white vinegar or lemon juice and sea salt.
  • Rub this mixture over the board and allow it to sit for 15 minutes before rinsing it off.
  • Dry it with a cloth or paper towel.
  • Use a paper towel to rub a small amount of a flavorless oil (linseed or grapeseed) over the surface of the board.
  • Continue until the board stops absorbing oil.
