Recently purchased my first Japanese knife, and was told that it needs to be honed on a Japanese honing steel. The German steel that I have is not hard enough for the harder Japanese steels. This knife sharpener is sufficient if you're nervous about the handheld one like I am. I will say, it does not seen to make the knife super sharp, so don't expect slices like Chef Ramsey or anything.
