This knife sharpener is sufficient if you're nervous about the handheld one like I am. I will say, it does not seen to make the knife super sharp, so don't expect slices like Chef Ramsey or anything. Recently purchased my first Japanese knife, and was told that it needs to be honed on a Japanese honing steel. The German steel that I have is not hard enough for the harder Japanese steels.
