The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. The first desk took us about 5 hours, and even knowing exactly what we were doing, the second still took about 4 hours. I would absolutely recommend having two people, plenty of space, and a whole lot of patience. That being said, the instruction manual was surprisingly clear and helpful. There are simply a LOT of pieces and steps involved. Once assembled, though Worth it. They look like much more expensive pieces of furniture and completely transformed our homeschool room. I especially love all of the drawers, cabinets, shelving, and built-in desktop outlets. If you’re willing to survive the assembly process, I highly recommend them. I ordered this hutch to put on top of my husbands very large desk for the purpose of decluttering the desk. It is high quality and pretty heavy. I have purchased other furniture items from Wayfair and although it takes a few hours to put together, it is very worth the savings. Nicely built, lots of storage for needed items. Great lighting although hard to find where located. Delivery was attempted too early without contact. Young men were strong but when I requested they take off wrapping in garage area, they didn’t listen and brought pieces inside and I had to clean area behind them. Very sturdy!! And well made. Look for screws outside of the interior box as our box was open and the screw package fell out as we opened the bigger box but did find it eventually while clearing up the packaging! I really love this piece as it is better than the 1st 'craft center' (that is how I use it) I purchased a few years ago which was ruined by a flood in our basement (no fault of Wayfair of course)! It has more style with the sliding drawers, costs a lot less, but did not come with a separate file cabinet like the 1st, but do not need it as this one has 2 file drawers. And the best part, is it has a electric recepitcal on the top of the desk for a lamp or another appliance if needed. And it fits in my ensuite walk-in closet (which is my little craft room). Beautiful desk set! Purchased the small and larger desk and hutch and all 3 came fully assembled. Everything was packaged well, no damage to any of the pieces. The boxes were extremely heavy and hard to move upstairs but aside from that it was nice to just unpack everything and move it into place. The items were back ordered but came much earlier than expected, still waiting on the 2 bookcases but those are also scheduled to come sooner than expected. Love my new office setup!. Yvette. NV. I really like the desk. I've got all my books and art supplies in the hutch as well as a few vain trinkets on display up on the highest shelf with more space for storage throughout. The seven desk drawers fit just about everything I could need within arm's reach. Desk itself is sturdy, it doesn't shake around while I'm writing, doesn't feel flimsy and there are adjustable feet at the bottom to level it out.
