You put water in the base and add the ice packs that are included to make the fan blow cooler air. It's not nearly as cool as an air conditioner but it's better than hot dry air blowing when it's too warm out. It comes with 4 ice packs so you can use two and have two in the freezer to switch out. The fan looks really nice and doesn't take up a large footprint. It has given me the ability to put off using the air conditioner a bit. This is the 3rd fan I have ordered. That should let you know how pleased I am with the quality of this fan. I gave one as a gift and put one in our bedroom. I ordered this outdoor misting fan from tried and true. It is really big and the airflow is nice. It's really heavy so it has to be mounted in something sturdy. The water tank is also a good size. This is a wonderful handheld fan. It is very light weight so I am able to take it with me everywhere I go which I do. We have had a warm summer so far but I am also going through perimenopause so am hot all the time and this little fan has been a life saver. I sit it on my desk at work and it keeps me cool all day.
