I imagine it is somewhat self-heating and also helps to hold onto the heat from the window. My largest cat loves the middle level basket. She will curl up in it for hours and has since I took it out of the box. Her sister is terrified of the entire thing and avoids even being near it. I have no idea why. I picked it because it had 3 levels, and they are always together, but it has not appealed to her yet. Super cute and my kitty LOVES it! It was a bit of a challenge to build it, but as a very weak person it only took me around an hour and a half to complete. Only complaint is that the hooks to hang the hammock don’t work at all, as in there are holes for them but they’re incapable of sticking in the holes.
