The outside width is 5" and the inside clips to hold inside the recessed can are 4." If this lasts less than the 50,000 hours advertised, I would be hesitant as throwing away a single light bulb seems environmentally preferable to throwing away this entire apparatus. One star deducted for lack of adequate dimensions in the listing. I didn't get to try the various settings because, alas, my smallest can light is actually 6 inches, so I'll have to try the appropriate size. We're super happy with this sofa for the price, however the color isn't really true to the picture. We were expecting a mustard/gold and the actual color is closer to a butter yellow. If you want a soft butter yellow I do totally recommend this though! The material is really nice, our cat doesn't scratch it, and it was pretty easy to assemble.
