Published only four years after Nigeria gained independence from British Colonial rule, and in the same year as the Republic of Biafra declared itself a free state from Nigeria, resulting in the Nigerian Civil War outbreak. This period marked rapid political, cultural, and economic transitions as the new nation navigated elections, installed new governance forms, and developed an international economy. This map shows the distinct cultures that have existed in the country for centuries and had been shaped by colonial rule, which did not account for previously established tribal lines, languages, as well as traditions, and values. Nigeria has become an economic and cultural center for Western Africa and is the most populous country. The discovery of oil in the 1970s led to a period of economic growth as the nation joined OPEC and began exporting to major markets across the globe. This language map is distinct as more than two hundred and fifty unique ethnic groups speak more than five hundred languages which have created challenges for national unification. Due to this incredible diversity, Nigeria officially adopted English as its national language in an attempt to provide linguistic unification. The color coding and unique aesthetic of this production distinguish it from other geopolitical maps due to its primary function to demonstrate nuanced cultural divisions to help political leaders develop and implement domestic policy. The Giant of Africa is shown in of the most influential periods in its already rich history, and this is authentic African cartographical history. Our museum quality giclee print comes printed with archival ink on premium heavyweight matte paper. Produced and published by the Nigerian Federal Surveys, this map was produced only two years after the Western African nation gained independence from British Colonial Rule. Modern Nigeria developed under these colonial forces throughout the nineteenth century and bore a distinctive culture marked by traditional norms, beliefs, and traditions that have been influenced by Western culture. Lagos is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world, with nearly twenty-four million residents. The iconic city is also one of the financial and cultural hubs of Africa and is one of the fastest-growing areas in Africa. In the 1970s, oil reserves were discovered in Nigeria, which sparked a period of significant economic expansion on a global level as oil exports became the primary economic driver for the nation. This production has a classic style that is immediately recognizable and would have been utilized as a resource for military and political leaders worldwide to develop and implement strategy and foreign policy. Two years after this publication, the nation would experience a civil war that would last for three years and result in the establishment of a democratically elected government. Nigeria has a diverse culture and the largest economy in Africa, which attracts residents from across the continent, primarily to Lagos, looking for opportunities. Produced by noted Swiss-American politician, diplomat, ethnologist, and linguist Albert Gallatin, this unique depiction of the indigenous tribes of North America in the seventeenth century bears a distinctive aesthetic and classic style. Gallatin is considered America’s Swiss Founding Father, and he established the iconic New York University. Gallatin’s work in cartography and politics helped shape the early portions of the United States. His illustrated map documenting the tribes of North America served to show the migration and cultural traditions from the 1600s on. While the Atlantic Coast had been well established, Lewis & Clark’s expedition to the Pacific Northwest had illuminated other tribes and peoples across the vast Western portion of the United States.Gallatin uses distinct colors to show tribal lands, cultural boundaries and also illustrates geographic features across the Atlantic seaboard. The rich tribal history of the Eastern United States was well documented during the nineteenth century as treaties, and land negotiations between settlers and native peoples caused a shift in demographics across America. Gallatin’s production is well regarded as a critical part of American cartographical history.Gallatin was integral to negotiating the Louisiana Purchase and was an ardent believer that control of the Port in New Orleans was crucial for westward expansion and promoting Manifest Destiny. He also believed in heavy investment in infrastructure like canals and roads to further connect the United States. This map depicts Palestine under Roman control during the rule of King Herod; this unique depiction of the region shows it during one of the most historically significant periods for religious development, establishment, and transformation. This map was produced by one of the largest publishing houses in London, which had been founded by George Philip in the 1840s. Palestine’s location between Syria and Egypt, which were two of Rome’s most valuable assets during this time, gave it considerable importance. While Rome had legions in both countries, it did not have such forces in Palestine and relied on loyalty by Herod to control the region. Herod died shortly after Jesus’ birth, and the Kingdom was divided into five distinct parts and ruled by two of Herod’s sons. These areas were largely divided between Jewish and Gentile settlements, and the Roman government made no effort to call for conversion to Greco-Roman traditions or ideologies. Before the Jewish Revolt of 66-74, Rome had no permanent colonies in Palestine. The region sustained small farmsteads, and the communities were self-sustaining with little communication or trade between Palestinian Jews and Gentile farmers. However, Galilee was one of the more prosperous areas due to its geography, which was highly conducive to cultivating goats as livestock. This map bears a unique aesthetic and historical quality that immediately transports the viewer back in time. By 1916 Palestine was ruled by joint British and French forces following the conclusion of World War I, and this is an authentic piece of Middle East cartographical history. Our museum quality giclee print comes printed with archival ink on premium heavyweight matte paper. Published during the era known as the “Liberal Revolution,” this map shows Guatemala in a period of transformation culturally, politically, and economically. President José Maria Reina Barrios was rebuilding Guatemala City in a Parisian style with grand, wide avenues and European-inspired architecture. He also worked to improve roadways, complete Telegraph lines, and build an electric grid for the Capital City. Guatemala City played host to the Central American Fair in 1897, which was an exposition of industrial and cultural innovations. Among his other plans were a transatlantic railway that would never come to fruition as plans for the Panama Canal were more practical. Guatemala’s geographic location on the southern border of Mexico has created a unique culture that blends Indigenous, Mexican, Spanish, and other European influences.Much of modern-day Guatemala was home to the Mayan civilization. In the sixteenth century, the Spanish arrived and colonized most of Central and South America. Guatemala gained independence from Spanish Colonial Rule in 1821 and became part of the Federal Republic of Central America which dissolved in 1841. Guatemala suffered from considerable political instability in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and decades of foreign-backed political parties resulted in years of Civil War. This map’s minimal aesthetic and distinctive style are immediately recognizable and transport the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. This period represents some of the most historically important times in Guatemalan history, and this is an authentic piece of international cartographical history. Our museum quality giclee print comes printed with archival ink on premium heavyweight matte paper. Established in 1934, the Great Smoky Mountain National Park remains one of the most iconic natural spaces in the country. As a subrange of the Appalachian Mountains, the Great Smokies receive more than eleven million visitors annually. This depiction of the Eastern elevations of the Smokies illustrates the rich culture of North Carolina's earliest inhabitants. Asheville sits as the Eastern gateway to the Mountains and is one of the state's most iconic cities. The US Geological Services began producing topographical maps in 1884, and their distinctive aesthetic is immediately recognizable. By the 1970s, these maps were primarily replaced by early satellite imagery and aerial photography, making these productions unique for their era. Advances in cartographical technology allowed maps produced during these times to bear incredible detail. The Smokies are known for their iconic low cloud cover that gives the hills the appearance of being covered in smoke and remains a national treasure. The classic style, geographical significance, and unique intersection of eras of this work make it a distinctive piece of Southern United States and Appalachian cartographical history. Additionally, the western portions of North Carolina feature some of the most iconic ridges that straddle both states and are widely popular. The region's unique geography was not conducive to large-scale agricultural operations. It remained primarily rural and reliant on tourism-based economies even during this map's publication. Efforts have been made to preserve historical and archaeologically significant sites within the forest dating back to early European settlement. Our museum quality giclee print comes printed with archival ink on premium heavyweight matte paper. Published by prominent Philadelphia-based Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co., this classic depiction of the Arabian Peninsula and Persian Empire in the middle of the nineteenth century bears a distinctive style that is immediately recognizable and transports the viewer back in time. The Persian Empire is now modern-day Iran and has a rich history, and the region has been inhabited for more than one hundred thousand years. However, the rise of Islam in the seventh century has come to shape the area culturally and politically into modern times. Throughout history, the region has contributed significantly to art and science, and Persian literature is considered one of the world’s most prominent traditions. Because trade between Asia and Europe took overland routes for much of the Middle Ages, the region advanced the spread of knowledge, agricultural products, and spiritual philosophies. The region is home to some of the most sacred holy sites in the world in eluding Mecca and Medina, which remain central to Islamic traditions. By the middle portion of the nineteenth century, the overland trade routes had been superseded by sailing vessels as circumnavigation around South America and Africa allowed goods to be transported to internationally. The region was never largely colonized though it does bear a distinct culture that is representative of its surrounding nations. The decades following the publication of this map saw significant expansion and the completion of the Hejaz Railway in 1900 spurred even further access throughout the area. This is an authentic piece of cartographical history with a classic aesthetic. Our museum quality giclee print comes printed with archival ink on premium heavyweight matte paper. Venezuela bears a rich history and distinct culture that blends indigenous traditions and beliefs with Spanish influences; the region came under Spanish control in 1522 and would remain a colony until the nation achieved independence in 1830. Venezuela was one of the first Spanish colonies to declare independence from colonial rule in 1811. However, the nineteenth century marked a period of political turmoil as military dictatorships competed for power. By the time of this maps publication, a popular movement had elected President Hugo Chavez. His central political beliefs returned control to the underrepresented rural regions of the country outside of the capital and urban centers. The Central Intelligence Agency produces and maintains the most accurate geopolitical maps of nations across the globe to provide information for political and military leaders to develop and implement foreign policy and strategies. Their maps are immediately recognizable by their uniform style and characteristic minimalism. As boundaries and borders shift and evolve, the CIA monitors these developments to keep the most up-to-date records. As Venezuela entered the twenty-first century, major political division and an economic recession produced a turbulent environment throughout the nation. The country contains some of the most vast reserves of oil on the planet, and the export industry is one of the leading economic drivers in Venezuela. This map depicts the nation in a period of significant transition politically, culturally, and economically as growing civil unrest created new demands for leadership and accountability at the highest levels of government. Our museum quality giclee print comes printed with archival ink on premium heavyweight matte paper. American settlers arrived in Nacogdoches in the early 1820s and began establishing communities in the city, many of which exist to this day. In the years leading up to the Texas Revolution in 1836, many prominent Texans called Nacogdoches home, including Sam Houston, Stephen F. Austin, and David Crockett. The small town bears a unique place in the development of Texas’ history as it has been under more flags than the State itself and was central to the early political and cultural development of Texas as a Republic and eventually a State when it was brought into the Union in 1845.This depiction of the city shows it and the State of Texas in a period of relative prosperity and growth following the conclusion of the American Civil War. The international port in Galveston was spurring economic growth as thriving markets in Kansas City, and Chicago continued the State’s iconic cattle ranching industry. By 1881 Nacogdoches remained a primarily agrarian city as nearby Houston became a central hub for manufacturing, milling, and rail transportation. Nacogdoches County comprises the metropolitan region, and the town is the County Seat which was officially established in 1837.This map’s minimal style and classic aesthetic distinguish it from other depictions of the era, such as panoramic maps, and it provides concrete historical data on how the city and county developed as the Nation approached the turn of the century. The latter portions of the nineteenth century marked significant advances in technology as the Industrial Revolution boomed. Our museum quality giclee print comes printed with archival ink on premium heavyweight matte paper. Produced by noted American geographer Samuel Augustus Mitchell, the County map of North Carolina and Virginia depicts the two Southern states in the year preceding the outbreak of the American Civil War. Virginia and North Carolina were among the most important economic drivers of the American south in the middle portion of the nineteenth century. Mitchell became one of the most published geographers of the era. He eventually printed more than four hundred thousand editions annually. Both states were primarily agrarian, and tobacco was the economic driver for export to Northeastern and European markets. The election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860 increased the tensions between the North and South. By April of 1861, the first shots of the Civil War were fired at the Battle of Fort Sumter in South Carolina. Richmond was named the Capital of the Confederacy on May 20. North Carolina did not vote to secede from the Union until Lincoln’s announcement of his plans to invade South Carolina. The years leading up to the Civil War saw numerous developments in both states, including the completion of interstate railings that opened up the region to settlement and improved the export of valuable crops. This map bears a distinct aesthetic and classic style that immediately transports the viewer back in time. Virginia and North Carolina helped shape the culture of the American South, and remain two of the most iconic southern states.
