Good disposer, not easy for direct wiring
I do not have long term experience with this disposer to judge durability, so this will only address installation. I needed to install the disposer with direct wiring from a wall switch. Local code says I need to protect the wiring through a flexible and armored conduit which already exists. I needed to remove the power cord with which this disposer came installed as standard. There were no instructions on how to remove the power cord and install direct wiring. Removal was not too hard when I finally realized that the cord was held in place by a snap ring. Removing the snap ring allowed the power cord to be removed after cutting the wires and disconnecting the ground wire. There is plenty of wire so cutting them close to the crimped connection leaves enough to reconnect using wire nuts. I had to install a conduit nipple to the opening left by the power cord removal. After measuring the opening left after removing the power cord, a standard size nipple and retaining nut is sufficient. Connecting the conduit to the nipple was no problem and running the wires from the wall switch through the conduit and into the connection chamber in the disposer was not too difficult. There is very little room in the connection chamber in the disposer, but I was able to find small enough wire nuts to connect the wires and get the ground wire installed to fit under the cover. It would be nice if a direct wiring kit could be purchased as an option, or if the the product came with instructions and a part list needed. Once it was all connected electrically, the rest was standard plumbing which was well described in the instructions and easy to follow. The mounting flange was also simple to install into my sink. The disposer installed leak free and is operating as expected. The only other small complaint is that the rubber drain insert doesn't allow the free draining of water in the sink and takes longer than I like to drain. I may modify the insert to trim the flaps and allow more room for draining. The noise is not louder than I would expect, and is quieter than the Insinkerator Badger disposer it replaced. Besides the direct wiring guesswork, I am satisfied with this product so far. Submitted photos show the conduit installed into the disposer.

Awesome Product
I had to replace my old Badger five when it finally began leaking water severely on labor day. Of course that wasn't what I wanted to deal with whilst I was entertaining, but you play the hand you are dealt. Anyhow, I had reviewed this product when it was first released and contemplated replacing my Badger at that point. However, I chose not to spend the money as it was still working. That being said, when the Badger finally did get past its useful service life I moved forward. The Excel is rather pricey, but certainly worth the money in my opinion. The disposal is quite large compared to the old one, but significantly more quiet. One would think that doubling the horsepower of the motor and going from one grind stage to three would be just the opposite. I am here to tell you that this BEAST is a wolf in sheep's clothing. Not only is it ridiculously quiet, it is powerful and sleek at the same time. Let's be honest, most of us don't have the cupboard doors open for decoration, but when you do, this will command some attention. Some of the other things I really like about the product are what it can process. This unit literally destroys just about anything you can throw at it. Bones, fruits, pits, corn husks, corn cobs, bananas, egg shells, celery, onion, and the list goes on. The key is good water flow during the grind process. These new water conserving faucets can cause water flow issues which will result in a clog if you feet the unit more quickly that the water can flush away ground material. In case you didn't know, ALWAYS use cold water to prevent liquefying any meat fats that could clog the unit or the plumbing. ALWAYS have the unit on before feeding material in to it. REGULARLY grind ice or other hard material to help scour food waste from the grind chamber that can cause foul odor to plague your kitchen. Be sure to remove the sink baffle regularly and clean under and around it to remove any meat or food scraps that me be thrown upon the underside of it during the grinding process. Lastly, periodically grind lemon or other citrus peels to help freshen the disposal. Now, let me address some of the things that the typically malcontent have to gripe about. Yes, the unit is expensive. Yes, the sink baffle that the unit uses to help mitigate the sound made from the motor and grind process does cause a slight pooling of water over the disposal opening. However, water being the dense fluid that it is makes a fantastic sound barrier. It will cause soap suds not to drain readily and you will have to use a little more effort to feed some bulky or larger items into the disposal. That being said, certainly not enough effort would be needed to place ones fingers in any harm. If you are that worried about it, use a wooden spoon handle or other object to press items through the sink baffle. If you cannot handle that, you should reevaluate your status as an adult. The extra resistance is nice to prevent unwanted items such as pressure cooker caps and other utensils from accidentally entering the grind chamber where they could cause or be seriously damaged. And finally, the product is made here in the USA which supports American jobs! I am happy to pay a little more money for something to make sure my neighbors are employed. In addition, the unit is fully warranted for seven years in home parts and labor. How can you beat that?

Badger 5 failed, decided to upgrade to a newer model!
My badger 5 needed to be replaced all the way back to when I first bought my house years ago. Previous owners abused it, home inspector said it was rusted. Surprisingly, after I explained the unfortunate failure, insinkerator offered me a 20% discount on a new evolution model, a true testament to their commitment to keeping customers, whether you’re a hand me down owner (like me) or a long time loyal customer. It’s nice to know that you can count on them to stand behind their products and keep their customer base! The overall installation would have been very easy if I had just planned to replace all the chrome pipes from the very beginning. The evolution compact is NOT the same size as the badger, and I knew this going in based on the specification (6” down from kitchen sink, but only 4” down from the disposals main outlet, which is just about a 1/2” too short). If you are replacing a badger, prepare to buy an 6” extension pipe (1.5” diameter) if you are planning to use the 90 out of the new disposal. It was only short to the p trap a matter of about 1/2” or less, but I wanted peace of mind and no leaks, so I simply just cut the additional extension pipe down to 4” to make everything work, with plenty of pipe inside each joint. Just when everything started to line up, the main extension pipe attached to the p trap broke because, you guessed it, it was rusted out. Glad it happened since it caused me to purchased a clear p trap package and a 1.5” rubber coupler so I could replace all the chrome pipes with plastic PVC pipes. Had I just done this from the start, I’d have saved myself so much time and effort. I also opted to remove the original bracket and install the included mounting bracket since the original was old, dirty, and yep, rusty. I used plumbers putty around the sink opening, you don’t have to press down since the screws underneath will do this for you, but I did it so I could remove some of the excess putty before tightening the sink bracket down. I laid the new disposal in the sink to weigh down the new drain piece while I installed the rest of the bracket pieces underneath. It was a pain to get that metal ring installed to hold the bracket up against gravity, but I did it after leaning inside the cabinet. The evolution was fairly easy to install, but it was very difficult to mount on the attachment under the sink because I was working against gravity. I kept getting the front and one other tab to line up, but that third tab in the back was a real pain until i crawled inside the kitchen cabinet and got an easier angle on it to get all three tabs lined up. Once you get them lined up and started, its easy to use the included hex tool to rotate and lock the disposal into place, which also makes the watertight seal to the sink. The best part is that after you lock the backets into place, you can still rotate the disposal!! This design makes it extremely easy to line up the outlet with your p trap or other pipes, really great!! I did the electric wiring before mounting the disposal to the sink bracket, it’s MUCH easier whether you have a plug or wire it directly, but make sure you have some slack to work with as this will help when you lift the disposal to the bracket and rotate it to line up the drain pipes. Once the disposal was mounted, it was fairly easy to line up all the pipes and tighten everything down in preparation of the leak check. I only had a few drops on the rubber coupler on the main drain, which had nothing to do with the disposal. A few more turns of the screw tightened up the rubber seal on the pipe and that was that! Love the clear p trap, you can see exactly how the water runs down the drain and know if anything is wrong before it causes a problem! This machine is POWERFUL! It surprised me when I first turned it on because you could tell it had higher HP, (i left the cabinet doors open), but at the same time, it wasnt nearly as loud as the badger. I cant wait to send food scraps down this new unit and see it all flow effortlessly down the clear drain pipes. Really worth all the effort after all these years, just wish I did it sooner!!

Direct Replacement for my Old Insinkerator 17
After multiple repairs and replacements of the switch on my old Insinkerator 17 batch processing disposal, I finally decided to replace it with a new unit. The only thing wrong with my old unit was the activation switch, but the parts are not really available any more. I really didn't want to mess with plumbing at all, so I was looking for a direct replacement. Searching on-line gave very little information, but I figured this model should be close and I ordered one for pickup at a local home center. When I got there, it said right on the box that it was a direct replacement. Something that would have been helpful to have on the website too!!! It would have saved me a lot of fussing and searching!!! The unit dropped right in, and performs well. It is definitely quieter than my old 17, but it seems like you have to run it a little longer to fully process it's contents. The new magnetic switch will hopefully be more reliable than the old one (3 replacements and two in place repairs over a 15 year period). One complaint is that it is difficult to find a position where the stopper is not running the disposal or plugging the drain. It's a very minor thing, but a recurring daily annoyance (you are either turning on the disposal when you don't want it on, or stopping the drain when you don't want it stopped!). Making the open and off position for the stopper more definitive would help. Overall, I am happy with my choice and would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone looking to replace their old model 17.

A+++++++This Product is made of/with Extremely High Quality Pats/Material!!!!!!!
This is an extremely powerful kitchen sink waste food in-sink disposal product! The last house I owned had a septic system so sadly I had to live for many years without being able to have one of these amazing best on the market food waste in-sink water disposal system as you need to have a sewer system to have one of these. My sister rents a condo and has another brand they installed in all their condo units. I cannot reveal their name as I would not think this site would be able to post a negative comment about a competitor's products. Just know that I do not waste my time writing reviews about products unless they are very well deserved! I am taking my time to write this review because this is one serious waste disposal system. Even though it is extremely powerful you should, always rad the manual and dispose of food properly and not dispose of certain n food as not all food especially grease, bones, etc are not to be put in the disposal please refer to manufacturer directions. I paid a certified electrician to install this as I didn't want to mess around and I have serious health issues that well I am unable to install this, but I had it installed, and it is the best 100% FACT! All I can say is the honest fact that wull all the problems and times a plumber at the expense which the condo tried to blame my sister however, the plumber knows whether it is my sister's fault or the water disposal causing the water to back up. I one time backed up and blew a pipe causing serious damage the condio luckily for her the condo she rents is/ was insured and my sister did not have to use her insurance, and put a claim and pay a deductible, etc. Seriously I admit even myself would not think that a waste disposal. I always buy the best products for everything, car, electronics, etc. however, I never would have realized what a cheap junk waste disposal could possibly caused me if it was myu fault and I cout it for the condo I know owner and it bnlew a pipe running to Condo below me! Do not mess around with quality products this product is the best 100% I give my word of honor which I know you do not know me, but serving in the military you go by your honor and strength! This is the best product on the market and they have an even larger powered one. This model is perfect for my needs! I love this product excellent value no worried about damaging and causing an insurance claim or ruing someone's Condo, etc. and possible non-replaceable sentimental pictures etc. that can never be replaced! DO not be cheap when it come s to anything especially things that can cause serious damage! This is made of the highest quality!

Very Quiet & Takes Everything in Stride, Even the Accessories are Great! However I had 1 small leak :( during install
Got this as a Christmas gift 2015. At first I felt overwhelmed as I have no plumbing experience and just purchased my first home. SO i called a contractor and he gave me a high price of 200 dollars to install. I said no way, I am book smart so i figured I would give it a shot! I did have to buy the power cord separately, no big deal to me. The biggest part that I felt uncomfortable with was running electric. This is how I got around that problem and had the Insinkerator up in running within an hour and it is so quiet and runs like a champ. What I did was go to home depot or lowes and insinkerator carries an air operated switch. You simply wire your plug to the disposal, plug that plug into the air activated switch and then in turn plug in the switch plug into the receptacle. The button for the switch comes in 3 nice colors, white, stainless, and then brushed aluminum. You can mount the button right there by your sink or as I did right as I open up the cabinet under the sink. Turn on the water, open the cabinet door, press the button, and away she goes!!!!!! Press it again to stop, keep the water running for 15 seconds to flush it out and that is it!!! So, the contractor wanted 200. I did it myself for 60 and that is how much the switch is. I would not dare to run electric without an electrician but anyone can run this air switch and i did the whole install in under an hour!!!! I am having one small problem. After the unit is on for about 25 seconds, a small drip can be seen coming from where the ring clamps onto the groves to keep the disposal hanging properly (mounted properly) I keep undoing the ring with the wrench that was included then sealing it back up tight again and still to no avail i am still having this drip, drip drip after half a minute. checked the putty, checked the fiber gasket, checked the 3 mounting screws and its driving me crazy. Due to the fact i love it. can never go without an Insinkerator now, its nice and quiet but still that lousy little drip. If i could get this solved. I would give it 5 stars. Everyone tells me how nice it looks, with the sir switch and they are fascinated so much they want to turn on the water and give it a whirl! anyone else have a small drip like this? I am not blaming the unit as i have no experience installing but anyone that looks at it says they could never tell that i installed it! that's saying something because i am a computer geek by trade not a plumber. thanks insinkerator! great product.. just 1 little drip. lol
