Don’t know why (have some suspicion that it may have been intentional) but every year we ended up needing to buy replacements. It is worth mentioning that the copper rod will patina as it cleans, as you can see in second photo, so frequent cleaning of the copper rod is essential. I recently purchased the cordless robotic pool cleaner and have used it three times now. I have an in-ground pool which is 8 feet deep. It cleans the bottom of my pool sufficiently.
