Toddler & Kids Chairs & Seating
It depends on whether your child prefers sitting at a table or on the floor. At five years old, they fall into the five-to-seven age group. For table seating, consider an activity chair, such as a plastic stackable chair with a 12-inch seat. Keep in mind that a foam play couch sits directly on the floor, so it won't align with a tabletop. Be sure to check the age range on the Specifications tab before making your purchase.
A foam play couch rests directly on the floor for play, making it very different from an activity chair with an elevated seat and supportive back. Activity chairs are designed specifically for sitting at a desk or table. Since a play couch stays low to the ground, it won't give your child enough height to reach a table comfortably. If you are looking for a complete set, check out our kids table and chair sets.
Seat heights range from 11.25 to 14.2 inches, with adjustable desk chairs reaching up to 21.3 inches. The right choice is whichever height allows your child's feet to rest flat on the floor. For example, an 11.25-inch chair works well for lower activity seating, while a 21.3-inch chair is better suited for a taller child at a desk. Always check the Specifications tab for exact measurements, as age guidelines alone won't tell you how high the seat actually sits.
For bedroom reading, a cozy club chair or small recliner gives your child plenty of back support. Some recliners come with a collapsible footrest, while wooden rockers are often sized specifically for toddlers or older children. If you are setting up a homework spot instead, pair an activity chair with kids desks.
A step stool helps children reach high surfaces like counters or sinks, while a kids' chair is designed strictly for sitting. If your child needs a boost at the sink, take a look at toddler and kids step stools. Because a chair stays low to the ground, it cannot double as a step-up. For older kids aged eight to 12 and beyond, teen lounge furniture offers the next best seating option.
