My girlfriend loves to cook. I bought this knife set for her as a Christmas present. Our old knife set was 10+ years old and falling apart, so she was really happy to receive this. The knives are sharp, the handles are shaped perfectly, and we love the variety of knives. The in-block sharpener is a great feature too. We have been using the knives for several weeks and are still very satisfied. We always hand-wash and dry the knives to keep them in good condition. I researched lots of knife sets and read countless reviews. I couldn't justify paying hundreds of dollars for an everyday knife set. If you plan on spending any time in the kitchen, good kitchen knives are a definite must. Preparation is the bulk of cooking and when you have good knives, it cuts down on the danger of cutting yourself, it adds pleasure to the work, and it cuts down on prep time. Knives are also a very personal choice and its best to at least go to a store and try it out for yourself first. Shun Knives are designed by the Japanese, so remember - its designed for small hands. This makes it fit most womens hands perfectly, but Ive heard of guys with larger hands not like it so much and going back to the German knives. So definitely try it out. Definitely a wonderful paring knife. Blade seems to hold an edge a very long time. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is that, with it's 3.5" blade and 3.5" handle, I find that my pinky doesn't quite fit at the butt-end of the knife, which makes handling it just a tad less natural than the Henkels Pro S paring knife, which I also own. The Trident Classic fits my wife's hand just fine, and she likes the slightly longer blade on this knife. If she was writing these reviews, she'd probably give this knife 5 stars, and the Pro S only 4 stars. So there you go... they're both really 4.5 stars, and how it fits your hand does matter. I got this exact knife in a set of Ever Sharp Pro knives for my wedding almost 15 years ago. I have never had to sharpen them and they all work perfectly to this day. The only reason I had to buy a new paring knife is that I lost the original one (I must have thrown it out accidentally.)
