The biggest drawback is installation. Floating shelves must be secured to the wall, and the hidden bracket can only support as much weight as the wall and hardware can handle. If you are mounting on drywall, make sure to use anchors rated for your intended load. A slim, decorative shelf usually is not the best choice for a heavy stack of books. Be sure to check the weight capacity under the Specifications tab, or opt for bracketed shelves if you prefer visible support.

There is no single gap size that works for every wall. Start by placing the lowest shelf where it is easy to reach, and leave enough vertical space above it for your tallest items. Short shelves under 20 inches work best for small clusters, while medium shelves between 20 and 36 inches can hold a longer row of frames. Always double-check the product length and depth specifications before drilling into your wall.

A floating shelf features a deeper board with hidden hardware, making it great for freestanding items like plants and books. In contrast, a picture ledge is shallower, allowing frames to lean easily against the wall. Choose a floating shelf for sturdy objects and a ledge when your display consists mostly of art.

Choose a bookcase if you need sturdy, floor-standing storage for a full collection of books. Wall shelves are great for saving floor space and displaying lighter items, but heavier collections are safer on a bookcase to avoid putting strain on your wall anchors.

This works best when the empty space is an actual corner. A wall mounted corner shelf fits right into the angle where two walls meet, whereas a straight shelf needs a flat wall space. Make sure to measure both walls first, and check the depth to ensure it won't block the walkway.

Wall and display shelves keep your books, plants, and framed photos up on the wall, leaving the floor clear and open for walking. Floating shelves hide their mounting hardware for a clean look, while bracket shelves show off their support and typically hold heavier loads. Shallow picture ledges are ideal for leaning frames, and corner shelves make smart use of awkward, empty angles. Heights generally fall into three groups: short (under 20 inches), medium (20 to 36 inches), and tall (over 36 inches). Before loading up a shelf with heavy hardcovers, be sure to check the weight rating on the Specifications tab, as a full row of books weighs significantly more than a few picture frames.
