A Christmas tree is one of the highlights of the holiday season. Whether you want to make your tree the focal point of your living room, place it in an entryway to greet guests, or bring a festive feeling to bedrooms, you'll want a Christmas tree that fits perfectly in your home. Before buying a tree, you should make sure the tree you've been eying is going to fit in your space. Read our guide to learn more about Christmas tree sizes and how to measure your space to ensure it fits.

How to Choose a Christmas Tree Size

There are a few factors that impact the size of the Christmas tree size you should buy.

Step 1: Choose a Location

Whether you want to place your tree in your entryway, living room, or bedroom, remember to position your Christmas tree near an outlet if you are going to be using lights. You will also need to place it away from any fire hazards like a radiator or fireplace.

Step 2: Measure Your Ceiling Height

Take a measuring tape and measure from your floors to your ceilings. When considering your ideal Christmas tree height, we recommend that you leave at least 6" – 12" of space between the treetop and the ceiling to ensure you have room for a tree topper (which tend to be 6" tall). Even if you don't plan on using a tree topper, you should leave a few inches of space so the tree doesn't touch the ceiling.
Example: If you have 8' Ceilings and want to use a tree topper, you’ll want a 7' tree.

Step 3: Measure Space for Base Width/Diameter

When choosing a Christmas tree width, we recommend having 3" of space between the base of the tree and the wall. If you have limited space, it's best not to choose an overly full or large tree. Consider instead choosing a half or corner tree, which has the appearance of a full tree from the front but is bare at the back so it can rest closely against a wall or in a corner. Alternatively, a slender tree takes up less space but still looks festive and gives you a complete 360° view.
Example: If the Christmas Tree you want is 64" wide at the base, you’ll want a 67" x 67" space to place the tree.
