Standard Pool Table Sizes

Regulation pool tables have a rectangular playfield – the play area between the felted bumpers – with a length that is exactly double its width. Any pool table that satisfies that requirement can be considered "regulation." When choosing a pool table size for your home, there are typically four standard considerations.

9' Pool Table: At 9' x 4.5', 9' pool tables are one of the largest standard pool tables available. They are also one of the two pool table sizes used by the World Pool Billiard Association.

8' Pool Table: This is the most popular pool table size for residential game rooms and private play. The 8' pool table is also the second of the two pool table sizes approved for tournament play in professional billiards tournaments. The 8' pool table is a good choice whether you're a billiards pro or a beginner.

7' Pool Table: Though these pool table dimensions aren't tournament-approved, 7' pool tables are an excellent choice if you want a less imposing yet still fully functional gaming surface. Also called "bar-size" pool tables, coin-operated 7' pool tables are commonly found at bars and other casual gaming spots.

Under 7' Pool Table: If you are short on space and looking for some friendly entertainment, small and mini pool tables are a fun purchase. Many of these miniature tables feature folding legs in order to be packed away when not in use. These tables are also suitable for kids and teens, giving everyone a chance to improve their skills!

How to Choose the Right Pool Table Dimensions

You should try to choose pool table dimensions that will leave you enough space to comfortably position and swing a pool cue. As a general rule, you should allow for the length of a regulation-size pool cue (57" – 58") plus at least 6" of additional distance between the edges of your pool table and any nearby obstacle or wall. Be sure to measure the length and width of your space before you shop for a pool table.

From floor to playing surface, most pool tables are between 29" and 31" tall.

Check out the chart below for standard pool table measurements and their recommended space requirements.
