Walk-In Closet Sizes for the Wardrobe of Your Dreams
Choose the ideal walk-in closet floor plans for your space.
Walk-in closets are any fashionista's dream – they offer ample space to store and access all your clothing in one dedicated area. Whether you’ve been wanting to upgrade your wardrobe storage or planning a closet remodel, learn the average walk-in closet sizes to help you with your closet design.
Typical Walk-In Closet Sizes
Since walk-in closets typically house both hanging rods and shelving, there is a recommended minimum closet depth of 4' to accommodate these necessary fittings.
The average walk-in closet size measures about 5' x 7' wide, but there are many walk-in closets that measure 7' x 10' wide (with an area of about 100 square feet).
If you are planning a remodel, these are typical measurements that would give you enough room to move around the space while accessing your clothing, but you can go larger in size as long as you take into account objects like structural supports, plumbing, or electricity – which all would require the help of a contractor.
If you are trying to upgrade your current walk-in closet storage system, keep reading below to learn how to find the right size, design, and layout for you.
Standard Walk-in Closet Layouts & Sizes
Choosing the right closet layout for your size closet is essential to best using your space. Keep reading for typical walk-in closet layouts and their dimensions.
- Single-Sided: The most basic walk-in closet layout is the single-sided closet. It can be considered a hybrid of the standard reach-in closet, as it has a similar simplistic design. The storage space (usually hanging) is situated on the wall directly opposite the entrance with enough space for you to enter. The most common walk-in closet measurements are between 4' – 5' in overall depth with 24" hanging space and 36" of internal clearance.
- Double-Sided: A double-sided walk-in closet layout comprises storage on opposing walls as you enter the closet, with a clear pathway in the middle. This storage can take the form of shelves on both sides of the closet, or as one shelf and one rod on either side. Invest in a walk-in closet system to make installation of a double-sided setup easy. These walk-in closet sizes range from small to medium in size with a depth of between 4' – 6' and width between 6' – 7'. Double-sided walk-ins need to accommodate either 24" of hanging rods on either side or 24" of rod and 12" – 18" of shelving – all with a 36" interior clearance.
- Wraparound: A wraparound walk-in closet layout can either be made of storage shelves and drawers on all three walls (U-shaped) or two adjoining walls (L-Shaped). These closets are medium to large in size and have about 7' x 10' or 100 square feet of area to allow for storage and clearance. A U-shaped closet should have a minimum depth of 7' and an L-shaped closet can have a minimum depth of 5' – 6'.
- Island: An island walk-in closet layout has a minimum depth of 13' and contains an island in the middle (usually for seating) that requires 3' of clearance on all four sides.
Tip!
