This modern rug shows that minimalistic solutions paired with relatively new techniques give outstanding effects and it is worth experimenting even with centuries-old, venerable crafts like carpet weaving. Its soft yet utterly durable body was made in Nuno felting, which is a fabric felting method developed by Polly Stirling, a fiber artist from new south wales, Australia, around 1992. The name is derived from the Japanese word “Nuno” meaning cloth. The technique bonds loose fibers, usually wool, into a sheer fabric such as silk gauze, creating a lightweight felt. In the case of this contemporary flatweave wool rug, the fibers completely cover the background fabric forming a uniform structure, divided into rectangles by raised seams. There is no figurative pattern or borders. The simplistic design is rendered in a versatile and chic shade of dark slate gray with bluish undertones. Such a universal modern rug will easily match a wide array of interior arrangements, neatly dividing the space and bringing in a touch of timeless elegance. If properly cared for, the Nuno felt rug will serve its owners for generations without any signs of wear. Doris Leslie Blau carries an exceptional collection of original modern rugs in many styles and materials. Contemporary hand-made rugs are a bridge throughout history, they are the fruit of the constant evolution of the weaving craft that has accompanied men since the dawn of civilization.
