A second-quarter 20th century Art European Art Deco rugs, the cream field with circular polychrome checked ring framed by a solid thin dusty rose stripe. Art Deco owes its name to the first major exhibition of decorative arts to be held after the First World War: L’Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes held in Paris in 1925. The supreme elegance of the custom-made interiors at the event set an example for interior designers the world over. Inspired by these innovative aesthetic ideas, artists, designers, craftsmen, and manufacturers from across Europe and America produced a wide range of modern pioneering patterns that delivered a dramatic change of style to furnishings in general, and early 20th-century vintage rugs and carpets in particular. Decorative arts of this period, sometimes known as the Machine Age, are characterized by a streamlined appearance. Art Deco antique rugs and carpets woven from the mid-1920s through the 1930s reflect this style.

They were (and still are) made from discarded clothes, leftover scraps, or clippings of fabric. Little do we know about the craft before the end of the 18th century. According to Jenni Stuart-Anderson, the author of “rag vintage rug shop making”, these homemade textiles were first brought to Scotland by the Vikings, and later spread throughout the entire country.

This circa-1940 vintage Moroccan rug features a netlike all-over design in colors of red, blue, and black, along with abstract patterns decorating the surface. It’s a simple yet intriguing minimalist statement. Vintage oriental rugs have been woven by the indigenous people of Morocco since the Paleolithic Era. Traditionally, Moroccan rugs have been woven by tribal peoples for their utility rather than for decorative purposes. Moroccan antique oriental rugs experienced a growth in popularity in the West with mid-century modern designers – such as Le Corbusier – who paired the thick piled Berber rugs with their sleek furniture. Many of these Berber carpets are woven by the Beni Ourain peoples from the Rif Mountains near Taza. Colors vary from neutral shades to bright, eye-catching hues, with designs ranging from ordered geometric shapes to a more free-form pattern. Part of the appeal to the modernists is the primitivism in the carpets, making them fit wonderfully with modernist themes. From versatile flatweaves to shaggy hand-knotted area rugs or runners, Moroccan rugs are both decorative and functional. They are valued for their technical qualities, expert use of fibers, great tensile strength, and abrasion resistance. Without a doubt, the original tribal Moroccan rugs from the Doris Leslie Blau collection bring character and a touch of worldliness to an interior.

This circa-1930 vintage flat weave Turkish antique rug features elegant striations in shades of brown and beige and a fringe on the ends of the kilim. A flatweave refers to a type of weave created from vertical (weft) and horizontal (warp) interlocked threads and is a feature of a number of oriental styles of carpets. Turkish carpet design integrates different strands of traditions. Specific elements of the Turkish kilim design are closely related to the history of Turkic peoples and their interaction with surrounding cultures, in their central Asian origin as well as during their migration, and in Anatolia itself. A runner rug, this piece is part of the traditional weaving of rugs specifically for narrow spaces, with weaving centers adapting their age-old designs to suit this specific format.

Vintage Moroccan rugs are highly sought after and this one's beauty is an easy explanation why. Delightfully soft, this carpet was hand-knotted by a talented artisan with a creative soul. The astonishing pattern makes you wonder what exactly the weaver had in mind. Three tall figures topped with arrow-like shapes could be abstract depictions of humans, exhibiting a minimalistic approach. However, what if those are not humans? Some could say that the design shows three Hayat Agaci - Trees of Life. It's a well-known symbol of immortality and the divine. Whatever the pattern's meaning is, it makes the carpet no less enjoyable. A vivacious color palette compromises of red, green, yellow, and gentle peach, with navy blue as the domineering hue. Exotic and stunning, this Moroccan carpet will be a great addition to any household. This vintage area rug originates from Morocco and dates back to 1950. It is made out of wool, to which Moroccan rugs owe their timelessness and durability. The rug’s field is mainly beige, with blue and purple reserved for the motifs within its pattern. The pattern itself is a grid of rhombi, each containing a motif. The set of motifs used here is quite diverse, with a distinct one being used for nearly every column of rhombi. Some imperfections may be seen in this rug, as in the partial border on the bottom, which seems to have been abandoned, and thus, the rhombic pattern begins to look increasingly haphazard on the left side of the carpet. This, however, is a true mark of authenticity and of the handcrafted nature of this unique piece of Moroccan art. From versatile flatweaves to shaggy hand-knotted area rugs or runners, Moroccan rugs are both decorative and functional. They are valued for their technical qualities, expert use of fibers, great tensile strength, and abrasion resistance. An early 20th century Samarkand kilim rug, the golden yellow field with staggering hooked-device roundels and half-roundels with rosettes scattered in between within an abrashed red flowering vine border. “Vintage” is a ubiquitous term frequently applied in the world of rugs and carpets. Vintage rugs are quite often confused with antique rugs. The difference between the two is often ambiguous. Just what is vintage and what is antique? To clarify this quandary, vintage carpets and antique runner rugs are defined by the time they were designed and crafted; they’re generally made after 1920. On the other hand, antique carpets come from a time before then, so, generally, they were made more than 80 years ago. Age is a primary distinguishing factor, but even this is a fluid one. The dividing line changes as time goes by. For example, a vintage area rug will someday be an antique. Vintage carpets and rugs are often linked to the origins of Modernism, so they can be more accurately placed in this category, given the association with the cultural, philosophical, and artistic elements of this movement.

This contemporary area rug constitutes an intriguing, vibrant composition. It comprises just two colors, beige and dark brown – such an unobtrusive color palette helps to maintain the balance of the Samarkand carpet because the pattern is truly electrifying. The geometric design, formed of numerous lines and crosses, resembles slightly shifted diamonds – it may evoke connotations with Swedish aesthetics. However, just two hues are typical of Moroccan Beni Ourain rugs, so the inspiration for this modern rug has been drawn from many cultures and traditions of weaving craft. A mid-20th-century vintage Moroccan rug in an all-over shade of beige. Although generally vintage rugs from all places in the world share certain common features and are rather distinguishable from antique carpets, they differ quite significantly from one another depending on the exact place of their origin. While a Persian antique rug from Tabriz may be easily confused with a similar creation coming from a different weaving center, or even a different country, like Turkey, vintage rugs, especially those from the first half of the 20th century, are much more diverse in terms of style and applied patterns. Inspired by new trends back then yet still deeply rooted in tradition, and sometimes folklore, of a given country, vintage carpets exhibit an immense array of designs and aesthetics characteristic to the nations that produced them. We would like to present some major categories of vintage area rug designs and show which way of thinking and historical background influenced particular weaving styles.

A modern antique rug is woven with a subtly striped field with shades of taupe and shades of yellow. A linear grid sits on top of the stripe and is accented with diamond shapes. Although the designs of antique and vintage Scandinavian woven rugs were originally inspired by imported textiles, they gradually developed into an innately northern expression. Simple geometric patterns and vignettes from everyday life such as bouquets of flowers, a child's sampler, or a pet dog were incorporated into flat woven tapestries or Swedish pile vintage oriental rugs and carpets, adding charm and immediacy to this folk art. A fresh and appealing aesthetic was sustained during the first half of the twentieth century by the weavings of the celebrated Swedish carpet designer Marta Maas-Fjetterstrom and her circle. The simplicity and purity of design in vintage Scandinavian rugs give them immediate relevance and contemporary desirability.

Vintage Swedish rugs can come in various shades and sizes and so do their designs. Back in the day, many weavers had a surprisingly modern approach to carpet making, as seen in their works. This particular carpet immediately draws the eye with its distinctive design and original color palette. Woven circa 1960, it is everything a vintage rug aficionado could dream of. Every single element is perfectly balanced, creating a harmonious composition. The pattern features beautiful flowers in full bloom, surrounding the central field which in comparison looks almost barren. However, a closer look reveals that this was an intentional doing which helped to anchor the whole design in one place. The color palette of this antique rug is not without meaning. Deep mustard yellow, contrasted with pastels was a bold, but rewarding move that resulted in a truly enchanting mix.

This circa-1930 vintage rug features a striking all-over design of a latticed field with simple geometric abstractions at the center of the diamond shapes. A muted patina of green, red and beige predominates the modernist look of the vintage early 20th-century carpet. Moroccan-style area rugs have typically been woven by tribal peoples for their utility rather than for decoration. These vintage carpets experienced a growth in popularity in the west when mid-century modern designers such as Le Corbusier paired the thick piled Berber antique rugs for sale with their minimalist furniture. Many of these Berber carpets are woven by the Beni ourain peoples from the Rif mountains near the city of Taza in northern morocco. Colors vary from neutral shades to bright, stand-out hues, with designs ranging from geometric simplicity to free-flowing abstraction. The primitivist feel of many Moroccan carpets makes them attractive to modernist collectors.

Samarkand is one of the oldest inhabited cities in Central Asia whose Sogdian name translates as “Stone Fort” or “Rock Town”. The name gives the idea of the town’s harsh surroundings composed of arid steppes, vast deserts, and rugged mountain ranges. However, this unwelcoming place became home to some of the most incredible Samarkand carpets rugs which encompass influences from practically all neighboring countries. This enchanting area rug runner, although presently made, stays true to the qualitative and diverse Samarkand weaving tradition. Its long, washed-out field is covered in an allover yet rather spare design of hooks that may have been inspired by the Anatolian “Çengel” – a kilim motif symbolizing protection and meant to destroy the Evil Eye. The rest of the main field bears light and delicate curvilinear motifs that constitute the background for the protective hooks. Everything is executed in a warm and balanced color palette of brown, beige, and mauve which is going to easily fit into a wide gamut of interior décors. The modern carpet runner was masterfully hand-knotted of the finest wool according to centuries-old weaving techniques due to which it will surely survive many years in perfect condition, pleasing the eyes and feet of its lucky owners. As any carpet runner, this Samarkand beauty will be perfect for hallways, corridors, staircases, and ample rooms, where it can introduce its oriental grace.
