This light is a very open concept as you can see. It is not heavy but feels sturdy. It is true black but the sheen is in between a low gloss and matte finish. We have it installed in my daughters fairly large room and it works great. It really depends on the brightness you want but my pre teen likes it low so we use a globe low voltage light.
