You mount them on posts that you stake into the ground, and during the day the solar panel atop the lights collects rays from the sun, charging the battery within so that energy can be utilized as light when it gets dark. The lights have an internal light sensor so that they turn on automatically at dusk, and off at dawn.

The product is working fine, but it was much larger than I expected. One of the lights did not work because the battery that came with it did not work. When I replaced the battery with a new one, it worked fine. It is cheaply constructed, so I don't know how long it will last and it is not usable in the winter months. Other than that it works OK..
