And the sides definitely weren't waterproof. This one is thick and padded and definitely waterproof! And the sides are water resistant. I always have the problem of drinks spilling down the sides of my mattress not on the top. So that's what's most important to me. While the side isn't plastic lined like the top it is very resistant.
