The website says that the mattress protector is "anti bedbug, anti-microbial" etc., which would indicate that it completely surrounds the mattress and has a zipper to truly protect. The actual package doesn't mention bedbug protection at all. It's more like an unpadded mattress pad that doesn't surround the mattress at all. We wound up using it for the underside of the mattress, with the padded mattress pad on top.
