Coffee Shop Creations at Home!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] • I’m not sure how they do it, but I’m a fan! They call it a “centrifuge” technique. It makes even normal coffee come out with crema. The Vertuo heats up extremely fast and the brew time is quick. The water tank holds 40 oz of water, so you don’t have to fill it up every other cup. You can tell Nespresso cares about the environment. They give you a postage paid shipping bag with the machine to send back the used aluminum capsules, so they can be recycled. There are 5 different sizes of capsules available: Alto(14oz), Mug(7.7oz), Gan Lungo(5.07oz), Double Espresso(2.7oz) and Espresso(1.35oz). When it comes to flavor, I am use to a pour over technique when preparing coffee, so the 7.7oz mug wasn’t as full bodied as I’m used to. Still a good cup of coffee and a unique experience because of the crema on top. The Espresso, Double Espresso and Gran Lungo however, are simply amazing. To think that you can have a good shot of espresso from a machine in less than a minute start to finish is remarkable. My machine came with a Aeroccino frother. It is very easy to use, but doesn’t create a log of foam. It is adequate for a latte, but not enough for a cappuccino. The froth on the cold foam function on the aeroccino, lasts long enough to look pretty during presentation, but then is gone. Just for reference, the flavors that I have tried so far are: Colombia, Decaffeinato, Aflorazio, Chiaro, Diavolitto, and Altissio. The capsule that Nespresso uses has a bar code printed on it that tells the machine what size and type the capsule is. I’m guessing it is due to this feature that there are no 3rd party companies that make capsules compatible with the vertuo machine. Which means you are limited to the variety and price point that Nespresso chooses, which to date does not include organic options. Overall an amazing machine and I would recommend adding one to your morning routine.

Delicious Espresso and a Fancy Machine Too
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I currently have one of the classic nespresso machines and I love it. I wanted to try out the Vertuo machine, but was concerned about it being too big, since I have limited counter top space. However, the machine is relatively narrow and fits nicely on the available space I have. I also love that the water reservoir is on a swivel, so you can move it to a spot where it takes up less room. Even the power cable is adjustable so you can choose which side of the machine it comes out on. I’m usually not a fan of red, but it really makes a nice pop of color in the kitchen, where all of our other appliances are silver or black. It’s a nice deep red too. Let me tell you, this machine is fancy compared to my little classic nespresso machine. An example: I was having a hard time figuring out how to open the lid where the capsule goes, until I plugged it in and realized that it’s electric! You lightly tap upwards on the lever and it opens. Vice versa for closing it. It even has a cleaning function. You press the button 3 times within 2 seconds and the light will blink orange to indicate its cleaning. So cool! Unlike the classic nespresso machines and capsules, the capsules on the vertuo have a barcode and the machine a barcode reader. Once you put the capsule in, the machine reads the barcode and determines what kind of capsule it is. There’s no need to choose the size of your drink. You just press the button. Just make sure your cup is large enough for whatever kind of coffee you’re brewing. And of course, it makes some delicious espresso. My machine came with the Aeroccino frother which is a separate device to froth milk. I was super excited to try it since I’ve made a lot of attempts with other gadgets to froth milk, but never used one that plugs into the wall like this. The device has a spring inside of it that creates the frothed milk, you can remove it to make just hot milk. There’s a little spot to store it in the lid when you’re not using it. Thus, there are two max fill lines, one for hot milk, and one for frothed. You also have the option to do a cold milk froth or hot milk froth depending on how long you press the button. The instructions don’t mention a minimum fill amount, so I used about half the amount of milk than the max allowed. So far I’ve only tried the hot froth option and it certainly does produce a good amount of foam. Is the micro foam as good as what you could get with a real milk steamer? Probably not, but it’s quick, easy to use, and easy to clean. I’m also not convinced that it does a better job than the other gadgets I have, but it is much easier to clean than the other devices. You just rinse it with water and pop it back on its base. Overall, this whole system is great and it beats Starbucks coffee and is definitely the next best thing to craft coffeehouse coffee.

Not perfect but pretty convenient
My background is that of using semi-automatic espresso machines, roasting and of course, grinding my own beans. It's an enjoyable process that, yes, produces better coffee that this machine does (most of the time). But man, to be able to walk up to the machine, push the button and have pretty darn decent coffee drinks of any kind? Pretty awesome. There's a lot to like about this machine, once you get past the price. I mean, I can put together a really high-end semi-auto setup for this price. Ok, enough about that, I knew what I was getting and how much it cost. The bean hopper is relatively air-tight and I haven't noticed an issue with beans going stale (of course I'm going through about a pound a week). There are lots of options for each drink: temp, strength, volume... Nice. I like this machine a lot. It makes good quality espresso and does a good job with milk drinks as well. I use it all day long. That said, it isn't without it's annoyances. - The HomeConnect is okay for downloading drink "recipes," but other than that, it's USELESS. This is the most annoying "feature." One would think that with a connected coffee machine, you could get it to turn on and wake you up with a delicious, fresh coffee? NOPE. When it starts up it insists on doing a rinse... which puts water in your cup, if you were to have one positioned. Well, I think, I'll just leave it on? NOPE. It times out at a maximum of 8 hours. So if you want coffee when you wake up (or when you unlock your door coming home), make sure you're only getting 7:55 minutes of sleep and turning on the machine is the last thing you did before you got in bed. What's the point? - It won't integrate with your existing smart home. They say you can use IFTTT but I haven't tried it because... what's the point? - While the HomeConnect does let you download coffee recipes, you can't add these individual recipes to your "Favorites." The consequence of this is that you can only select a single custom coffee from the panel. Favorites could have been much better. - The control disk on the interface sometimes spins easily, sometimes not. - It doesn't know when the milk container is empty so if you're making a series of milk drinks and don't notice, it'll spew large quantities of steam instead of warning you. - I'm currently in "needs cleaning" mode while I wait for cleaning tablets to arrive. It would have been nice if they included a couple of samples (and a water filter) with the machine... or at least if it had warned me ahead of time.
