These whiskey barrel planters are great. Our family has had three more just like them for 16 years. One is used as a small water feature with a bamboo fountain and the other two as traditional planters. Because of the size and material the soil does not dry out too quickly. For these two new ones, I've converted them into self-watering planters using sturdy 22 inch saucers and 1/2 inch solid-braid nylon rope for wicking the water up into the soil. The rain wizard really works great when we had a hard rain last week it filled the barrel full and I have used that to water my flower garden. It works great and is easy to disburse the water out. This is on my patio, directly where the downspouts for my new gutters will be installed. Since CA is continuously under water restrictions it's a great tool!
