The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. It’s almost a shame to ever lower the intricate mahogany front panel (which takes over a week to carve), of this mid-19th century antique replica, except that its leather embossed writing desk with pigeonholes and drawers is so useful! I put it together mostly alone over two days (desk one day, hutch the next). My only complaint is the picture on Wayfair is misleading in color. It is not a true grey as I had hoped. Inspired by an antique desk and bookcase this Large Mahogany Secretary Desk from Niagara Furniture is impressive in both it’s design and scale. Made of beautifully grained mahogany, the bookcase features a removable pediment top section with removable finial. The top section consists of finely figured mahogany panels in the doors flanked on the outsides by reeded columns capped in acanthus carved tops. The interior of the Large Mahogany Secretary Desk has a shelf and more drawers and pigeonholes than one can count. All of the drawers are dovetailed and feature the same high quality construction throughout. The slant top of the desk drops down to create a writing surface while the base of the desk has six drawers enhanced with wonderful solid brass pulls and the whole piece rests on solid mahogany shaped bracket feet.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Pain to Assemble — But 100 Worth It! I purchased two of these desks for our homeschool room, and now that they’re finished, I absolutely love them. They are beautiful, substantial, have tons of storage, and feel very sturdy. The white finish with the darker wood top looks even better in person. Fair warning though assembly is a PROJECT. The first desk took us about 5 hours, and even knowing exactly what we were doing, the second still took about 4 hours. I would absolutely recommend having two people, plenty of space, and a whole lot of patience. That being said, the instruction manual was surprisingly clear and helpful. There are simply a LOT of pieces and steps involved. Once assembled, though Worth it. They look like much more expensive pieces of furniture and completely transformed our homeschool room. I especially love all of the drawers, cabinets, shelving, and built-in desktop outlets. If you’re willing to survive the assembly process, I highly recommend them.
