The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. The “rustic” antique black looks nice, but due to the ROUGH texture of the wood I think it will be extremely hard to dust. The dust clothe will catch in the wood. For the cost, I think I should have kept looking. I also believe that photos of the lower section should have been available to view. I do “like” the armoire, but I don’t “love” it. I guess it will do the job. I hung coats & jackets from the clothes rod and beneath the shelf I installed I put my capris. I used the other shelf in the lower section and placed my jeans in there. It’s very roomy. Note, it states there are 3 shelves and there were only 2 actual shelves in the unit. I guess if you placed 2 shelves in the upper section that you would have 3 separate spaces if you count the bottom of the upper area as the 3rd shelf. Hope picture helps if you’re trying to decide.. Our TV cabinet arrived quickly and was packaged very securely. It comes in two boxes and it is very heavy, so you might need two people to carry it in. The instructions were good and all the pieces were there, which isn't always the case, so very happy with that. It is not an easy assembly, but there are moving parts and a lot of smaller pieces, so that's not a surprise. At one point we needed two people to stabilize a section while tightening some screws, but for the most part, it's a one person job taking maybe 3-4 hours if you're not experienced. The look is nice. We got the light oak color and it's a little lighter than I expected, but looks good. The most important part is that it works perfectly. We haven't installed the TV yet, but the remote works and it slides up and down effortlessly. The only slight minus is that the remote has no instructions or directions. Great stand…you can only mount the tv one way though and for us that meant the doors would open toward the bed as we put this at the end of our bed. Very easy to put together! My husband and I assembled it in about two hours after spending a half hour organizing all the parts. I highly recommend watching the assembly video on the Grain Wood Furniture website—the video is for the two-door armoire, but it’s very similar and helpful. We’ve assembled quite a few pieces of furniture, and this one is exceptionally well made. We did make one mistake by using the wrong screw, so be sure to pay close attention to the directions. This armoire is the type of piece that brings old world charm to a modern space. I love how it brings a sense of story to the room. The biggest pain points for me were that it arrived with a big, jagged chip on the front leg, some odd stains on the wood in some spots that didn’t match the finish, and there were chips in finishing wax used to seal the wood that uncover an entirely different color underneath. I know the piece is intentionally designed to look vintage, but those specific elements don’t appear intentional. I did appreciate that all the doors are lockable, which wasn’t specified in the description, so that was a nice surprise, but the exterior plate covering the actual hole of the of the locking mechanism on one door doesn’t line up, so unfortunately it doesn’t lock.
