When the leaf is open, it created more counter top than I thought it would. The back is plain and could use some adhesive drawer/shelf liner, which I might do later. I really love this kitchen island. It's great color and extra storage for me. I put together myself in 2 hours. I took my time and followed the step by step directions. Please do not buy this product. It says it is hardwood, it is not. It is all particle board/composite with covering. The backing is a plastic cardboard thin sheet and the same thing is in the bottom of the drawer. Even when everything is tightened is is very shaky (not the wheels, the actual frame) and wobbly.
