The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. I loved the look of this cabinet/table when I saw it. It was just what I was looking for; a table that converts into a small cabinet when not needed as a table. There were no reviews which made me nervous initially to make the purchase but I took a chance and I'm glad I did. The table came in two boxes and was very well packaged. I was very impressed as I unboxed it and laid out the parts. Everything was well labeled and all pieces were present along with extras. It took my husband and I a little over 6 hours to assemble it. I would have easily given it 5 stars except for a few cons to this beautifully designed cabinet/table. Cons: It comes with lighting in the glassed storage shelving and electrical outlet on the side of the cabinet. These were not necessary. They ended up making the unit messy with cords and cables. I'm using it as a desk so you rarely see or need the cabinet lighting. The lighting is also powered by plugging it into the USB port on the desk. It's just not necessary. Secondly, the unit sits very flush to the floor. It was probably not intended to be on an area rug like I have it so I can't put it flush to the wall and the shelf drawer drags when I open it to access the inside. Don't even know where to start with how poor this item is. I've built tons of furniture, and without a doubt, this is the worse I've ever gotten. Ranked list of the things that are wrong with it: 1. The wooden top of the table wasn't routed/channeled along the back to allow it to properly seat with the back panel of the cabinet, so we had to take off the backpanel to have the top be flat. 2. Piece of the top of the table was cheaply glued on and just fell off 3. Many, many holes drilled in incorrect places. I just re-drilled them in the correct spots myself 4. Whole, literal steps of building the furniture not included in the manual. And those steps that were omitted, also led to there being less screws and fasteners needed for the final thing. 5. Tolerances around cabinet doors and drawers were abhorrent—everything is at a different angle and not aligned, no matter how much we tweaked hinges. Last thing I'll ever buy from Wayfair.. Adam. I'm using this as a coffee station and it works perfectly for that. The pull out rack works well for our regular and travel mugs. The left side cabinet works well for holding coffee filters, bagged coffee and lots of extras. I used the center cabinet for all of our oversized water bottles that I never had a place for. Now for the negatives. I'll start by saying I was hesitant at first to buy this because there were no reviews. But the size was perfect and the storage options were what I was looking for so I took a chance. The assembly instructions were atrocious. Several things were mislabeled in the instructions when compared to the labels on the actual parts. There were a couple small areas that had some damage despite being packed very well. However they were on the inside of the cabinet so I didn't bother asking for replacement pieces. On the left side of the cabinet they have you assemble it so the cam locks are visible which is not attractive at all. I luckily caught it and flipped the shelves so they were on the bottom side and not visible. If you have common sense, you'll be able to build it even with the errors in the instructions. This unit perfectly utilized a tiny 8x10 “bedroom” in my 126-year-old house. I use it as a multi-purpose guest room (for one) and craftoffice area. It’s super resourceful and space-saving which I love and wouldn’t have otherwise conceived would be possible given how tiny the room is. That being said It’s a great deal for what you get, but what you get is a fully occupied weekend for AT LEAST two people, and that’s if you’re familiar with assembling furniture, which I am. This was hands-down the most tedious and time-consuming piece I’ve ever assembled—however, I expected that to be the case and prepared myself for it. I would advise separating all the parts by step (hardware especially) beforehand to prevent stupid mistakes like using screws on step 37 that were meant to be used on step 13. Every detail matters. I am single but I can see how this project could potentially end in divorce. All in all, it’s a great piece for the money—just prepare yourself for not just hours, but DAYS of labor. Highly recommend for the patient DIY folks. The instructions aren’t great but they rarely are. Fortunately there are QR codes on each step which link to videos showing the guys in the factory assembling it.
