The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. I bought this unit as well as the Brienne Armoire for a long wall. Parts came in damaged for this cabinet; however, they were quickly replaced. Putting it together wasn't too hard - just had to put the top on out of order because I wouldn't be able to assemble it and then lift it on top of the other cabinet - but it worked. Wasn't too hard to put it all together. I can't agree with all of the reviews - because its not cheaply made, very sturdy if you put it together correctly, instructions are easy enough, and looks great!
