They look nice, but provide no actual air flow. But they replace some wooden ones that had started to rot and animals had found their way through them. Bought the primed functional half round gable vent, and am happy with the solid construction. Before painting needed to remove the insect screen, which was stapled to the back, to avoid getting paint on the screen. Also needed to sand some edges due to wood splinters and one slat which had a significant raised grain pattern. Reattached the screen with brass nails as the staples were unusable.. Caroline B. You will love this vent. It's well built and works perfectly. I was initially worried about the size because my old vent measured 22 inches, and the only replacement I could find was this 21-inch version. My plan was to return it if it didn't fit. I have a round brick opening, and I was wondering how I would fill a 1-inch gap around the new vent after installation. When I went to remove the old vent from outside while on a ladder, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was only held in place with finish nails. It also had a round wooden frame attached around the outer edge that fit against the brick. I pushed the old vent into the wall cavity, and the new vent fit perfectly over the existing brick molding. After making sure it was level, I nailed it in place, applied caulk, touched up the paint, and the job was done. Yes, I did have to leave the old vent inside the wall cavity, but it wasn't causing any issues and saved me from having to remove additional material. Overall, the installation was much easier than expected, and the vent looks and works great. Highly recommended.cavity which I didn't like,but was not tearing off the brick molding to retrieve it.. It's almost perfect for where I put it. I have a very high (~12') octagonal window in my bedroom, and it's impossible to find a shade that's right for it. But the sun shines in that window right in my eyes and wakes me up at 6am every morning, so I wanted to cover that window without making it look ridiculous. I have white plantation shutters on the lower windows, so it looks nice with those. The reason I didn't give it a higher rating is because there was a choice between "functional" and "non-functional" versions of this cover, but the terms weren't defined. I assumed they meant that functional has moving slats, and non-functional was slats that don't move. So I ordered the functional version to be sure I could close them all the way But what they meant was that functional has holes between the slats (for allowing airflow in an attic, I guess), and non-functional is solid - no holes. I should have gotten the non-functional version, because it would have blocked all the light. But I couldn't wait another day to get rid of that early morning light, so I just installed it right away and started getting the benefit of blocked light in the morning. Urethane Gable Vents shine when it comes to looking like a real wood product without all the maintenance that can come with wood. They are moulded from beautiful designs, like wood products, and come to you factory primed and ready for your paint.
