The clock is quite handsome, and the overall appearance is better than expected. The color is exactly what I was looking for. The brown is very rich with just a hint of red. Dark but not espresso. A little light and it really brings out the character and color. The clock isn’t real wood but it isn’t plastic, which you get on some (often cheaper) clocks. The engineered wood does keep it lightweight, however. My one complaint is to get the clock and chime working is hair-pulling. I followed the directions to a T and the problem is the little hand keeps falling down to around the 6 o’clock mark when you try to set the time. I ended up getting it to work but without the chime.. IT’S ABOUT TIME … AND PATIENCE: This clock is classic and beautiful with a gold rim around its face, gold numbers, gold scrollwork, black ornamentals, and spindly hands. Another reviewer stated the cover over the face is plastic instead of glass and that the "wood" is really pressed cardboard hiding beneath a thinly veiled veneer. I think he was right about the cover - it does feel like plastic instead of glass. The wood feels like wood to me. I hope it is since the clock is described as being made of wood. The chime melodies are all beautiful and a joy to hear … except at night when I want to sleep. Fortunately, the volume can be lowered or the chimes can be turned off between 11 p.m. and 5:45 a.m. or turned off altogether. I would like to keep the back cover on all the time but it’s a bit of a pain to put on after removing it to switch chimes on or off. It’s important to READ THROUGH THE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE attempting to install batteries and set the time. And it takes patience to get the chimes to sound on the hour. I used my smartwatch with a second hand to set the time so that it would chime at the right time. It’s not perfect but it’s as close as my patience allows. Like most everything else, the clock is made in China. It’s sad that it’s not made in the United States. At just over $200, I feel like I’m paying good money for something lacking the quality of past years (plastic cover and the possibility of veneer instead of real wood).
