This is a classic foot stool and the black finish is quite striking. The steps are narrow, so I would not recommend it for someone of "a certain age" for climbing up to high cabinets. It's small enough that I believe I can putty and paint it myself since my husband already discarded the packaging. I ordered the red folding ladder. I really like it. I love the fact that when I stand on the top step, I have something to brace my legs against. I think this is an important safety feature.
