The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. It is a complete setup for a good price. A lot of people have talked about how hard it is to put together. I think maybe a couple of tips would help. For the cam lock screws, follow the tip in the booklet to take the plastic part off first and push them into the slots before putting the screws in. To mount it on the wall where studs were 16 on center, I had to use two scraps of wood at the top and bottom of the unit.
