The material is somewhat sturdy manufactured wood which is only noticeable up close. The frame will definitely only fit a 10 inch mattress or less. We tried a 12 in and the main door will not close. As many have mentioned, it would have been great to have shelves inside the cabinet but if you're handy you can easily install some for more storage. I have been shopping around for a quality Murphy bed for quite some time and almost bought a $4000 model but I'm glad I was able to save once I found this one for a fraction of the cost.
