The trunk is as it looks. Hinges seem strong but even if they weren't, the wood is so light that it wouldn't hurt fingers. If you are looking for a solid piece of furniture, this isn't it. Even though I had the measurements - sometimes it is hard to visual what the size will be - it is not as deep (front to back) as I was hoping - the length and height are great. The legs were easy to put on (although the diagram was incorrect on the order of the locking washer and regular washer).
