We first tried this over a firm latex pad, and it did not add much noticeable improvement in thickness or softness. Next, we tried this down pad over a 2 inch thick foam pad, and it made all the difference! I am not at all a fan of foam pads. However, using this topper over the foam pad makes the foam less susceptible to sinking! Love it! I loved this Organic Cotton Topper! It was like a giant, super dense, heavy cushion. I didn't bring it with me the last time I moved, because I had had it for a couple years. After a couple years, the section where I usually lay had flattened down slightly. But when I had it, it was so comfortable!
