The two compartments on the top lift up to open but sadly they do not lock in place to remain open, which could be a little inconvenient but there is a slow close on it so it does not slam closed. **TIP** there is a piece that covers the top so you can possibly sit items up there that is probably some type of mdf board and it probably blends in with the packaging and mine was thrown out, so just be mindful and ask for that piece. This is a great desk on a budget! I initially fell in love with several desks that came in way over the 500 mark. However, I wanted to be more frugal so that I can make more pricey choices with other furniture in my house. This is such a great buy. OK..Well I went back and forth with cabinets...Studied them all for days, and tried to remove the ones I found that were metal. I wanted 6 shelves, and these were taller than the rest and matched the Wonston Porter drawers that I purchased days before, so I thought they would be the same. BUT THEY ARE METAL. This cabinet is awesome!! Unfortunately my sewing machine with the dust cover doesnt fit on the under side shelf but Ive got in its carrier bag and that fits on top just fine.
