I was only using small 5lb circles as the base but with the way the weather has been I was afraid of the legs getting bent with how the circle makes the top weights lean against the canopy legs. I ordered a cantilever umbrella that had a metal X base which couldn't support the weight of the umbrella so I ordered this to hold it in place. It took about $15-20 worth of sand from the local hardware store to fill it up. For me the base is SO bulky though. Perhaps this isn't something that can be avoided due to the nature of the item and the weight it needs to compensate for but it takes up a lot of space so just make sure you plan for that. Awesome! We havent filled it yet, as its not quite shade-needing season, but Im already so much happier with this than I was with our last one.
